Common questions

VIP — questions, answered plainly.

6 research-context questions about VIP. Answers stay neutral and reference what is published in the peer-reviewed literature — no dosing, no human-use guidance, no extrapolation beyond what the cited studies report.

  1. 01

    What is VIP?

VIP (vasoactive intestinal peptide) is an endogenous 28-residue neuropeptide first identified in the 1970s. It functions as a neurotransmitter, vasodilator, and immunomodulator and binds the VPAC1, VPAC2, and PAC1 G-protein coupled receptors.

  2. 02

    What is a VIPoma?

A VIPoma is a rare neuroendocrine tumour that secretes VIP, typically causing watery diarrhoea (the WDHA syndrome). The Siddappa 2019 Pancreas review (PMID 31609932) summarises the diagnosis and management literature.

  3. 03

Why is VIP studied in cancer?

VIP / PACAP receptors are overexpressed in many common cancers. The Moody 2016 review (PMID 26702849) covers VPAC1, VPAC2, and PAC1 receptor expression in cancer and the development of VIP-based tumour imaging and targeted-therapy candidates.

  4. 04

Is synthetic VIP approved for any clinical indication?

No. Synthetic VIP is not FDA-approved for any therapeutic indication at the time of writing. Clinical use is investigational; pulmonary and inflammatory disease research has explored VIP and its analogues in early-phase studies.

  5. 05

    What is the osteoarthritis context?

Jiang 2016 (J Biomed Sci, PMID 27553659) reviewed evidence that VIP down-regulation is associated with increased pro-inflammatory cytokines in osteoarthritic joints, positioning VIP and analogues as exploratory therapeutic candidates.

  6. 06

What are the evidence caveats for VIP?

VIP has extensive basic-science literature; the three citations here are clinical-context anchors rather than a comprehensive review. Synthetic VIP is investigational with no approved therapeutic indication.
